Brother [Day 19 of Thankfulness]

currently: listening to 'Chariot' by Gavin DeGraw

Day 19: Brother
I'd call myself quite independent at times. I like to solve problems of my own, I like my own space, and I prefer not wanting to bother other people with my problems. As the eldest child, I think we're raised to be that sort of person. We're meant to take control and manage ourselves. Be responsible. Know what to do and handle it on your own.

However, there are times where you know you can't handle it on your own.

There's a song I really loved last year called 'Brother' by Needtobreathe. I've listened to it hundreds of times, on repeat when I need to hear encouragement. The song is pretty straight-forward, its lyrics focused on being there for your brother, and that you'll help them make it through their darkest times.

Of course, what I really enjoy is the story behind the song. This band, which does involve two brothers, were at such odds with each other that they almost split their band apart. But instead, they write a song together. This song called 'Brother'.

Why out of all things, if you're at odds and ends with your brother and bandmate, would you still be able to write about the unbreakable bond of brotherhood?

Brothers are often painted as the biggest rivals in your life, but they're the closest people you know. They're your biggest competitor, and your biggest influence. They see your successes, and they also see your failures. And despite all this, they will still stand by you.

I've learned that in a world where people will either be for you or against you, your "brother" is the strongest person who will keep you from taking the world on your own. No matter the issue, they'll be "your shelter", be "your fortress", be "the one to light the way."

The people who stick by your side in times of your struggle are the most honest people you'll ever know, and the people you need the most.

Even though I don't have an actual "brother", this song is a reminder to me for all the people in my life that have and will be like that for me.

I may feel like I have to be independent at times, but I should never feel like I have to walk alone.
